Mindfulness in Nia: The Power of Presence | Phil Oldfield

Working in Mental Health is something I have done all my working life and I qualified as a Psychiatric nurse in 1986 in Glasgow.  Mindfulness was certainly not in my vocabulary or awareness.  Over the years I continued my work between Scotland and England, eventually settling in Fife and diverted career direction by studying Counselling to allow a more immediate response to peoples issues (where possible) before developing into something more chronic. 

Along the way I discovered Mindfulness, which was not only great for clients but for me too.  Learning to be more mindful allowed me to be more present in my life, enhance my experiences and find joy.  Coincidentally, at a similar time, I discovered Nia in Burntisland – this allowed me to further deepen my practice of being present, increase self-awareness and acceptance.

What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness encompasses two key ingredients: awareness and acceptance.  Awareness is the knowledge and ability to focus attention on one’s inner processes and experiences, such as the experience of the present moment. Acceptance is the ability to observe and accept—rather than judge or avoid—those streams of thought.

What is the purpose of mindfulness?

The goal of mindfulness is to cultivate perspective on one’s consciousness and identity, that can bring greater peace mentally and relationally. Mindfulness may also be used in mindfulness-base therapies to address stress, anxiety, or pain, and simply to become more relaxed.

How does it relate to Nia?

The primary goal of Nia is to promote overall well-being by integrating body, mind, and spirit through movement.

Here's how the Nia Technique incorporates mindful movement:

  1. Body Awareness: Nia encourages participants to cultivate body awareness by paying attention to sensations, alignment, and the way their bodies move. It emphasizes listening to the body's signals, honoring its limitations, and making movement choices based on personal comfort and pleasure.

  2. Sensory Awareness: Nia incorporates the sensory perceptions of the body, including touch, sound, and sight. Participants are encouraged to engage their senses fully, connecting with the music, feeling the textures of movement, and being present in the current moment.

  3. Embodying the Joy of Movement: Nia emphasizes the joy of movement and encourages participants to express themselves through dance-like freedom and self-expression. The focus is on experiencing the pleasure and fulfillment that comes from moving the body in a way that feels authentic and enjoyable.

  4. Mindful Breathing: Conscious breathing is an integral part of Nia. Participants are guided to use deep, rhythmic breathing patterns that help to synchronize movement and enhance overall awareness. This mindful breathing technique can promote relaxation, reduce stress, and increase focus.

  5. Music and Rhythm: Nia uses a variety of music genres and rhythms to inspire movement and enhance the mind-body connection. The music is carefully selected to support the different energy levels and movements involved in a Nia class, providing a holistic and immersive experience.

  6. Adaptable Movement Choices: Nia offers adaptable movement choices, allowing participants of various fitness levels and physical abilities to engage in the practice. It encourages individuals to explore movement within their own comfort zones while offering opportunities for growth and challenge.

Overall, the Nia Technique promotes mindful movement by encouraging participants to be fully present, tune into their bodies, and move in ways that feel pleasurable, expressive, and aligned with their individual needs. It combines physical fitness with a holistic approach, emphasizing self-awareness, joy, and personal expression.

I find Mindfulness and Nia perfect bedfellows and both practices respect and enhance each other.  In my classes I try to honour the form of the Nia practice by being fully present, enjoy the freedom within the form by listening to the needs of my body, emotions and spirit thus gaining the maximum joy for me in that moment.  I encourage my students to become more aware of their individual needs and utilise the space created to fully step into their practice and embrace the magic that the mindful Nia movements deliver.
